You don’t have to spend a dime to have a good time on the weekends in Austin! And, if you’re looking for the best family-friendly weekend activities, you’ve come to the right place. Here are our faves:
Head to a farmer’s market.
There’s no better weekend family activity than a farmer’s market! And in Austin, there are a wide variety of market options for the whole family to enjoy. Some of our faves include the Barton Creek Farmers Market (Barton Creek Square Mall parking lot; Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm), HOPE Farmer’s Market (East 5th & Comal; Sundays from 11 am to 3 pm), and the Mueller Farmer’s Market (4550 Mueller Blvd; Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm).
Check out Fitness in the Park.
From yoga, to Zumba, to dance, the Austin Parks & Rec foundation offers a ton of free, family-friendly fitness classes in several local parks. Check out the schedule here, and get ready to move!
Go for a family hike.
Hiking is definitely one of Austin’s preferred family activities. That’s because the city is replete with tons of fabulous trails, gorgeous parks, and some of the best urban greenery in the country. Gather up the kiddos and head to the Greenbelt, walk along the Lady Bird Lake Hike & Bike Trail, or hit the Turkey Creek trail at Emma Long Park.
Hang out in Zilker Park.
On the weekends, Zilker Park truly comes alive! This is the perfect spot to have a picnic with the fam, throw a Frisbee around, and simply hang out and people-watch. There are also tons of events and festivals that happen regularly in Zilker Park; here’s the park’s events schedule.
Go to storytime at BookPeople.
BookPeople is Austin’s premier indie bookstore, and their storytime hours are perfect for the entire family. Weekend storytimes are at 11:30 am on Saturdays; check out the BookPeople site for more info.
